What A Year It Was!
CELEBRATING 2023 & LOOKING AHEAD TO 2024
As the curtain falls on 2023, Delta Stageworks celebrates a year of artistic growth and diversity as a company; a year filled with amazing performances by some 25 company and community members, enriching workshops, digital storytelling and one very funny comedy night! The heart of our mission—to harness the transformative power of theatre for well-being and community building—has resonated throughout the year, leaving a lasting imprint on all who experienced our shows and workshops.
Then & Now: A Digital Journey Through Reflections
We kicked off the year with a return to Then & Now, a digital web series we’ve created combining our 2021 stage show with video interviews that delve into the highs and lows of navigating life during the pandemic. The docu-comedy short video series, set to be released on our website in early 2024, captures reflections from both community members and our talented company. It’s a testament to the resilience and creativity that emerged during challenging times delivered in bite-sized shorts.
Heirlooms & Baggage (My Mother’s Story): A Workshop Production and Full Production Spectacle
In February, we brought the compelling Heirlooms & Baggage (My Mother’s Story) to audiences in a workshop production at Kin Village in Tsawwassen. Directed by Cory Haas, with dramaturgy by Marilyn Norry and projections by Cliff Caprani, the show featured company members Camryn Chew, Peg Christopherson-Keenleyside, Renee Iaci, Ragini Kapil and Eric Keenleyside. A huge shout out of thanks goes to Delta Youth Theatre for helping us get this production up in a non-theatre space.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from our audiences was extraordinary; underscoring the connections people made with our diverse stories and the meaningful nature of the show. Comments such as “Fabulous show!” and “Thoroughly enjoyed it…including laughter and tears” echoed the sentiment of an unforgettable experience.
Fast forward to October, and we were at Genesis Theatre with the full production of Heirlooms & Baggage, directed by Fran Gebhard, with set & projections by emerging artist Christian Ching, lighting design by Keaghan Elrick and stage management by the equally talented Emily Willcox. With new scenes and staging, the impact of the show resonated around the community again, sparking heartfelt reactions on social media. From “Thoroughly enjoyed the show!” to “What a great performance!”—each comment underscored the emotional journey our patrons embarked on, emphasizing the power of storytelling in building community.
May Laughter Reign: Improv Workshop and Comedy Show Extravaganza
In May, we ventured to The Red Barn in the Southlands for an evening of laughter and connection. An improv workshop paved the way for a sold-out Comedy Show hosted by the talented Ragini Kapil, a proud member of our company. Collaborating with Vancouver’s Tightrope Theatre, this show became a fabulous fundraiser, showcasing the generosity of our community in supporting Delta Stageworks.
As we bid farewell to 2023, Delta Stageworks remains committed to the belief that theatre is not just an art form but a force that brings people together. The diversity of voices in our community, as showcased in Heirlooms & Baggage exemplifies our dedication to creating spaces where stories unite us and build the bonds of a thriving community. Here’s to a year of creativity, connection, and the enduring magic of the stage.
